You’ll find iconic purple lupine lighting up the hillsides of Crested Butte in late June to early July, painting the meadows in vibrant color well before the rest of the wildflowers hit their stride. If you’re planning a trip earlier in the summer, chasing the lupine bloom is 100% worth it—they’re one of the first big floral displays to pop and are a dream to photograph.
Top places to see lupine in Crested Butte:
- Lupine Trail
- This local favorite winds through hillsides blanketed in purple lupine, with incredible views of Gothic Mountain. Starting at the Slate River Trailhead, it’s about 1.22 miles one way to the next junction, but the first ¾ mile offers the best bang for your buck with open views and a constant display of blooms. Perfect for a shorter, rewarding hike.
- Best in late June through July.
- Slate River Road (great for photographers)
- This dirt road is lined with wildflowers and open views—perfect for golden hour photoshoots. Drive or bike for maximum flower scouting.
- Gothic Valley
- A classic wildflower destination that gets early blooms. The combination of lupine fields and dramatic peaks makes it a stunning early-season spot.
Since lupines tend to bloom earlier than most other wildflowers, this is a great reason to plan a visit in late June or early July before peak tourist season.
