It offers spectacular views of the canyons and rivers below and is a popular destination for hiking enthusiasts. You can also easily access this section of the park without a 4×4. Mesa Arch in Canyonlands is 27 ft long and one of the most popular sunrise destinations for photographers. It is located along the cliffs of the canyon with views of both the high desert and La Sal Mountains.

Shafer View Trail

The Shafer View Trail is personally one of my favorite must-stop overlooks in Canyonlands. While the Shafer Trail can be a long hike down or a gnarly 4wd off-roading adventure, the view from above is one of the easiest to access for visitors and will get your jaw-dropping.

Standing along the edge will sure give you a little vertigo so be careful not to get too close to the edge.

Grand View Point Trail

When I think of Island in the Sky, this view is what comes to mind — it literally looks like islands floating in the sky. A short walk to this view point cannot be missed.

Lathrop Trail

The Lathrop Trail can be extended to an 11.8-mile hike dropping 1,600 ft down into the canyon to the White Rim Road which is an adventurous hike not for beginners, or kept as a 5-mile hike just to the Canyon Rim which offers some of the most stunning views of the canyon from above.

There is no parking lot for this trail but you can just pull over along the road. The hike starts very flat and exposed as you hike through open grasslands.

Canyonlands Needles Hikes

The Needles District is one of the most underrated parts of the US National Park System and my personal favorite. It was named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa sandstone which resemble Bryce Canyon’s hoodoos a bit, but cooler in my opinion.

If you’re looking for a hiking adventure full of iconic rock formations, picturesque trails, and fewer crowds, then the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park is the perfect destination for you. The unique geological features and breathtaking views are a highlight not to be missed.

The Needles District is more remote and located about 2 hours south of the Island in the Sky district but you can certainly plan to visit both districts during your visit to Canyonlands. Here are some of the best hikes to experience in this hiker’s haven:

Elephant Hill is an unpaved dirt road that can handle 2wd passenger vehicles. There are not many roads in the Needles district that can be accessed without a 4wd high clearance vehicle (and additional permit), and this is the most popular trailhead that provides access to Chesler Park, Joint Trail, Druid Arch, the Confluencer Overlook and more.

Chesler Park Loop Trail

This 11-mile loop trail takes hikers through some of the most stunning landscapes in the Needles District, with views of towering rock spires and massive sandstone walls. However, a double-digit hike in the desert can be a big day and you can keep this hike shorter by going to just the viewpoint which is one of my favorite hikes in the park.

Joint Trail

A moderate 6.5-mile out-and-back trail that takes hikers through narrow canyons and beneath towering rock formations. This can be combined with Chesler Park Viewpoint Trail to create a 10.7-mile loop.

Druid Arch Trail

This 10.8-mile out-and-back trail takes hikers to the spectacular Druid Arch, a massive stone arch that stands 94 feet tall and 46 feet wide. Also starting at Elephant Hill, the trail branches off as you hike in sand through the bottom of Elephant Canyon. It offers an adventure in the final steep mile which includes a ladder and some scrambling.

The Maze District: A True Adventure

If you’re looking for a truly unique hiking experience, the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park should be at the top of your list. Known for its remote and rugged terrain, this area is the least accessible district but offers some of the best hikes in the park, guaranteed to challenge and reward even the most experienced hikers.

The shortest drive is almost 100 miles (one-way) from civilization so plan to be fully self-sufficient and pack in extra gas for the drive out. Alternatively, you could hike the Lower Red Lake trail from the Needles district (roughly 10 miles one-way), and cross the Colorado River (by raft of some sort) to access the Maze.

Or, you can arrange for a guided tour of the area, which can be a great way to experience the Maze District without the stress of navigating the challenging terrain.
